Elementary Action & Service

WHAT IS STUDENT ACTION?

In the PYP, it is believed that education must extend beyond the intellectual to include not only socially responsible attitudes but also thoughtful, appropriate action. PYP believes that successful inquiry will lead to responsible action, initiated by the student, as a result of the learning process. This action will extend the student’s learning, or it may have a wider social impact, and can be an action taken by an individual student or group of students working collaboratively. This action is an extension of the central idea of the unit your child is working on in class.

Through this action, students grow personally and socially, developing skills of cooperation, problem solving, conflict resolution, and creative and critical thinking. They also exhibit their commitment to the attributes of the learner profile and IB attitudes.

ACTION

DESCRIPTION

EXAMPLE

Direct Action

Person-to-person or person-to-environment

This happens when a student picks up litter even though they did not drop it.

Indirect Action

Person-to-community

This happens when a group of students or a class raises money to help an organization.

Advocacy

Creating an awareness

This happens when a student reminds friends, family, school, or community to recycle paper or when a group of students create a campaign to recycle and share their information.

Research for Action

Learning in action / action in learning

This happens when a student borrows a book on their own to extend knowledge about something that was learned or pursues their own inquiry and shares with the class, family, etc.

Action Posters

ACTION WALL

Providence Hall Elementary has an Action Wall in the hallway. We want to highlight the actions our students are taking that aren’t often seen in school. If your child takes action, please take a picture and have your child fill out the Action Reflection Sheet (you may assist) and turn both items into the front office. We will display your child’s action on our Action Wall.
